How to learn English effectively

About me

On a holiday in Bournemouth, England (click on the photo to enlarge it) My name is Pawel Kowalczyk. People often call me Pako - this is simply an acronym for my name. I live in Wroclaw, Poland (my native language is Polish).

I'm passionate about learning languages. I've been learning English for several years and managed to learn it quite well (see Articles: How did you learn English?). I created this website to share my experience with you.

My other interests are computer programming and science (especially psychology, the techniques of learning). I also like to read books (mostly in English) and listen to music a lot.

What's your favourite book?

I read lots of books. I don't have one that I could call my favourite. I like detective fiction - especially books by Agatha Christie (detective novels with Hercule Poirot) and Ian Fleming (the series of books with James Bond). I also like "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of The Rings" by JRR Tolkien.

One of the best books I read as a child was The Adventures of Nicholas and The Gang by Goscinny and Semp ("Mikolajek i inne chlopaki" in Polish). I also liked the Three Investigators Mysteries series (these books were so interesting that I just couldn't stop when I started to read one!).

Apart from novels, I often read books about computer programming, psychology, learning techniques and popular science.

I do most of my reading in English - it helps me improve my language skills. See Articles: The importance of reading and listening. You can also read about the books for English learners which I like on this page: Articles: Dictionaries and textbooks.

What's your favourite music?

Well, it's a tough question. If I had to pick one favourite genre, I would probably choose rock. But I also like pop, hip-hop, jazz, reggae, dance.

The bands/performers I listen to include U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Cardigans, Vanessa Carlton, Linkin Park, Razorlight, Smash Mouth, Limp Bizkit, Avril Lavigne, Daniel Powter, Faith No More, Led Zeppelin, Dido, Apocaliptica, The Streets, Coldplay, Eric Clapton.

And some Polish ones too: Happysad, Kasia Kowalska, Kazik, Kult, Lady Pank, Myslovitz, Sidney Polak, T-Love, Trzeci wymiar, Varius Manx.
