Hi anica,
Seems like you've had Matura today :).
Your note and letter are really good. I just rephrased the note a bit and added a sentence which tells your guest what he can have for breakfast. (One thing I don't understand - why did you have to go out to the cinema so early? ;)) I also corrected a few mistakes in the letter.

Hi!
I'm going to the cinema with Wendy. I'll be back at about two o'clock. There's some scrambled egg left for you on the cooker. Remember that in the evening we're going together to Helen's birthday party.
See you,
XYZ

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing with regard to your offer which appeared on the Oxford University website. I would like to study journalism at your university.
I have just passed my Matura exams with very good grades. I like writing articles and columns for the newspapers. I run a website where I regularly publish articles about science, environment and fashion. I got the Best Polish Article award for my article about the price of fame.
I've been studying English for about five years and I'm quite fluent, but I want to brush up my English skills. Studying in England would also give me an opportunity to get to know British history and culture. I would also like to meet new people.
I would appreciate a reply at your earliest convenience.
Yours faithfully,

Correct answers:

13.2 to
13.3 if ('when' is probably correct here, too)
13.4 they
13.5 be driven
13.6 have been using
13.7 whose ('having' is certainly WRONG)
13.8 will try
13.9 each
13.10 on
The whole article from Telegraph.co.uk:
An education authority has told parents that their children no longer qualify
for free travel after officials measured the distance from their homes and
discovered the school's back gate was 200 yards closer than the front gate.
The school was previously calculated to be just beyond a three-mile limit,
enabling parents living at Titchfield Park, Hants, to qualify for free bus
passes for their children.
Hampshire County Council sent officers to confirm the distance. They discovered
that, if the children used the back gate, it was just under the three-mile
statutory limit.
Parents have now been told they must pay £400 a year to continue using the bus
service or else the pupils must walk or be driven to reach Henry Court
Community School, Fareham.
The decision has outraged the 17 families of the 22 children who have been
using the service. They say their children now have to walk across fields or
alongside busy roads.
Joyce Reilly, a nurse whose son Stuart, 13, is affected by the ruling,
said: "We will try to pool our resources and help each other out. But it is
going to be impossible for some to get to work on time."
Andy Barncastle, manager of the council's passenger transport operations,
said: "The three-mile limit is part of legislation and has to fall somewhere."

8.2 says it is reducing the number of divorces but they said that they want to prevent them so my answer is : FALSE. Am I right or this are the same things??

Ice,
You are wrong. Preventing divorces means reducing their number. The answer in 8.2 is 'TRUE'.

I know that it could be wrong but
prevent verb {T} -
to stop something from happening or someone from doing something
IMO stopping is not reducing :P

I've got one question - does the answer "although" in 13.3 is optional. In my opinion it is. What do you think about it?

I think that 'when' is another possible answer in 13.3. But I'm quite certain that 'as' is wrong.

why do you say that 'as' is wrong?

"They discovered that, as the children used the back gate, it was just under the three-mile statutory limit."
makes sense.

Aga: and what about "although" in 13.3 ?
although does not make sense. it's BECAUSE they used back gate- it was under the limit.
Johnson's baby: Hey, as far as 13.7 is concerned, is that possible that 'having' is also correct?
in my truly personal opinion- incorrect :)

'Having' just doesn't make sense in 13.7. Just take my word for it :)

What do You say about word-ALL?
They discovered that, ALL the children used the back gate, it was just under the three-mile statutory limit.

folks,
>> in 13.7 'having' doesn't make any gramatical or logical sense; it is Stuart who is affected by the ruling and not his mum - Joyce
>> concerning 13.3 - sentence including this gap was meant to point out the fact that when the kids used the back gate, their distance was below 3 miles limit; therefore 'although' and 'all' is completely wrong here

Is it correct, if I wrote "Yours sincerely" at the end of the letter, starting it with "Dear sir"?
Or if I wrote in the formal letter: "I am looking forward for consideration"

Gee...I u r right. 'Having' is absolutely incorrect. I made a mistake while reading a text. But it's only 0,5 pt. I suppose I have lost only 2,5 pts. in whole exam so I'm only afraid if i didn't make any mistake when I put the answers to the answer sheet. Thx.

Dasa,
In British English we use 'Yours sincerely' when a letter begins with 'Dear Mr ...' or 'Dear Ms ...'.
In letters beginning with 'Dear Sir' or 'Dear Madam', we use 'Yours faithfully'.
The phrase 'I am looking forward for consideration' sounds strange to me - I think it's incorrect.

hey guys
its like you cant be sure of these answers yet, can you?
i think it totally sucks that the official answers will be published no sooner than on friday. but english is not my concern, what worries me most is polish...why can't they just do it the old, traditional way and publish the answers the day after? i mean- what difference does it make to them? but we all know it DOES a difference to us...
